First Chinese Adaptation of Agatha Christie Commences Production

Zespa Media is excited to announce that we have helped our client, Agatha Christie Ltd, land their first TV adaptation in China with the top streaming platform, iQiyi.

This is the first official Chinese language TV adaptation of Agatha Christie's works. The series will be based on Agatha Christie’s most legendary character, Hercule Poirot. Titled “Checkmate”, this Chinese series is set in Republican-era China and will star Hu Yitian, Leon Zhang, and Viann Zhang. The show is directed by Zhang Weike (My Roommate is a Detective). Principal photography is taking place in Huzhou, Zhejang Province.

The Chinese adaptation of this iconic Belgium detective is set to have a younger Chinese interpretation named Situ Yan – an extremely perceptive young man with great reasoning skills, empathy and attention to every little detail. Driven to defend justice, he becomes a detective in the town of Harbin after he loses his job as a lawyer. As he investigates alongside his two intrepid partners, it becomes apparent that an overarching storyline links each of the cases.

As the exclusive agent for Agatha Christie Ltd in China, Zespa Media originated, developed and negotiated on all aspects of this project. The show is expected to premier on iQiyi in 2022.
